Zirconia crowns vs. porcelain veneers: which is right for you?

Özel Dent Club Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı Polikliniği ·

Porcelain veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of healthy teeth and need minimal reduction. Zirconia crowns cover the whole tooth and are stronger, so they suit heavily filled, broken or root-treated teeth. Many smile makeovers combine both.

Key differences

  • Tooth reduction: veneers about 0.3–0.7 mm, crowns about 1–1.5 mm
  • Coverage: veneers cover the front surface; crowns cover the whole tooth
  • Strength: zirconia withstands higher chewing forces
  • Appearance: both look natural; veneers are especially lifelike on front teeth

A word on “Turkey teeth”

Over-prepared teeth and unnaturally white, bulky crowns have given some treatments abroad a bad reputation. A good plan preserves as much healthy tooth as possible, chooses a shade that suits your face and shows you a trial smile (mock-up) before any tooth is prepared.

Which should I choose?

If your teeth are healthy and you want to change colour, small gaps or shape, veneers are usually the more conservative option. If teeth are broken, heavily filled or root-treated, crowns protect them better. Your dentist will recommend the right option after examining you.

Frequently asked questions

How long do veneers and crowns last?

With good care, both commonly last 10–15 years or longer. Grinding your teeth or biting hard objects shortens their life; a night guard helps.

Will my teeth be shaved down to stumps?

No. Veneers require only minimal reduction, and crowns only as much as needed for the material thickness. We plan the preparation digitally before treatment.
