Dental implants in Turkey: a complete guide for international patients

Özel Dent Club Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı Polikliniği ·

A dental implant is a titanium root placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Most international patients need two trips: one to place the implants and a second, usually 2–6 months later, to fit the permanent crowns once the implants have fused with the bone.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone. Once it has fused with the bone (osseointegration), a zirconia or porcelain crown is attached on top.

Unlike a bridge, an implant does not require grinding down the neighbouring teeth, and it can replace anything from a single tooth to a full arch.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Most healthy adults with enough bone, or bone that can be rebuilt with grafting, are suitable. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and some medications can affect healing. We make a preliminary assessment from your panoramic X-ray or CT scan before you travel and confirm it with an examination and imaging at the clinic.

Treatment stages and timeline

  • Remote review: send photos and X-rays for a preliminary plan.
  • First trip (typically 3–5 days): examination, 3D scan and implant placement under local anaesthesia; temporary teeth if needed.
  • Healing at home: usually 2–3 months in the lower jaw and 3–6 months in the upper jaw.
  • Second trip (typically 5–7 days): impressions, try-in and fitting of the permanent crowns.

Aftercare

  • Avoid hot food, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours.
  • Mild swelling for a few days is normal; take the medication prescribed.
  • Clean around implants daily with a toothbrush, floss or interdental brushes.
  • Have a check-up at least once a year, at home or with us.

Frequently asked questions

Is implant surgery painful?

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during it. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is usually managed with standard painkillers.

Can I fly after implant surgery?

Most patients can fly a day or two after a routine implant placement. Your dentist will confirm this based on the extent of your surgery, especially if a sinus lift was performed.

How long do implants last?

Implants that have integrated well can last for many years, often a lifetime, with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. The crown on top may need replacing over time.
